Working with Karen C. Koehmstedt over a 5-year high-conflict divorce, custody, and asset division case was the best decision we could have made for our child's well-being.

When our case began in 2021, I started with just 4-hour non-overnight visits for false allegations. Over time, that moved to two days, then three, and eventually to an alternating schedule. Throughout those years, every hearing before a commissioner felt frustrating. Commissioners only have 15 to 20 minutes to review quick declarations, and when the other party is manipulating the court with false claims, it often felt like I was being blamed for the conflict too. There were times I wondered why Karen was having me file contempts, motions for reconsideration, or engage with the Guardian ad Litem (GAL) when it felt like the court was minimizing it or not seeing it. I didn't always want to file because of the added stress and cost, but Karen knew what she was doing. This was a full final divorce decree, child custody battle, and asset division. On the asset division side, Karen did an incredible job. The other party wanted to leave me with basically nothing, but Karen knew exactly how to perform the correct evaluations and gather the proper documentation so I received a fair deal. At times, I felt frustrated simply because I didn't understand the legal process, but once I saw the bigger picture, I realized how brilliant her strategy was.

A 5-day trial before a judge is completely different from a quick commissioner hearing. Karen came into trial with binders of evidence, knowing every single fact, date, and detail of our 5-year history. She understood the dynamics of high-conflict behavior and courtroom manipulation completely. Her line of questioning during litigation was brilliant, structured, and laid out the facts so clearly that even the judge remarked on the clear pattern of a dad who genuinely cares and fought his way up from no time.

The result? The court awarded me sole decision-making authority and placed the mother on a strict step-up parenting plan starting at alternating weekends. Asset division she did amazing job on being fair and explain it flawlessly to the judge.

After interviewing three other attorneys Karen was my choice. She asked good questions pertaining only to my case, she took good notes (in a note book not a laptop) and I didn't feel as though I was another number in the days quota. “I am so grateful to have had Karen represent me and my children in my divorce battle. I really wanted a simple divorce, but it was impossible with a husband like the one I had (an abuser and narcissist).
